Ruby Dean (Shane) Ross Thomas

Ruby Dean Ross Thomas was born on September 27, 1942 in Mitchell County, Georgia, to Mr. Frank Ross and Mrs. Odessa Ross. She departed this life on Friday, January 31, 2014, at her home.

Ruby accepted Christ at an early age and joined Zion Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Camilla, Georgia. She later moved to Newark, New Jersey and joined the New Hope Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Charles E. Thomas, where she was a member of the Usher Board.

She attended Camilla Consolidated School graduating in 1961.

She married Jesse Thomas in Orange, New Jersey. To this union one son was born.

She worked for the State of New Jersey at Woodbridge Development Center in Woodbridge, New Jersey for twenty-five years. Not only did she have an innate ability to work with special needs children, she genuinely loved her "kids" at Woodbridge and shared many stories about them to her family and friends.

A very colorful, fun-loving, creative personality, Ruby was always making people laugh as she recalled the stories of her childhood. Ruby loved doing crossword puzzles during her leisure times and enjoyed traveling and taking cruises and loved spending time with her family at their many gatherings.

Ruby was a faithful member of The Ancient Arabic Order of Daughters of Sphinx, State of New Jersey.

Ruby received "Special Recognition Award" as an Eastern Star member on February 21, 1999 from the Medina Grand Counsel of Deliberation for her service and devotion in the state of New Jersey.

Due to her health, Ruby moved back to Camilla, Georgia in 2004. She was always surrounded by her loving family, church members and friends.

Ruby was preceded in death in 2005 by a sister, Ruth Ellen Richardson of Detroit, Michigan; in 2011, a brother-in-law, James Earl Linebarger, Sr.

Ruby leaves to cherish her memories a loving and devoted son, Darryl Corneal Thomas (Charlotte) of Albany, Georgia; loving parents, Frank Ross and Odessa Ross of Camilla, Georgia; four sisters, Estalena Heard of Camilla, Georgia, Joanne Hawkins (Wallace) of Moultrie, Georgia, Thelma Linebarger of Hephzibah, Georgia, Deborah McKinney (Tony) of Camilla, Georgia; a brother, Frank Ross, Jr. (Sarah) of Albany, Georgia; brother-in-law, Gus Richardson, II of Detroit, Michigan; an aunt, Lillie Mae Ross of Camilla, Georgia; special nephews, Anthony McKinney, Corey McKinney and Hakeen Clements; other nephews, James Linebarger, Jr., Gus Richardson, III; special niece, Shundrea Williams; other nieces, Teresa Harris, Laniece "Michelle" Jackson, Victoria Ross, Elizabeth Ross; two special friends, Doris Bullard Johnson of Camilla, Georgia, Lila Hayes of Irvington, New Jersey; a host of cousins and friends.


The funeral service of Ruby Dean Ross Thomas, will be conducted Saturday, February 8, 2014, at 11:00 a.m., at Zion Grove Missionary Baptist Church, 7470 River Road, Camilla. Reverend E. L. Wilson will officiate. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Deacons of Zion Grove Missionary Baptist Church.

Flower Bearers will be Camilla Consolidated School Class of 1961, Ushers, Friends of the family.

Active Pallbearers will be Hakeen Clements, Anthony McKinney, Corey McKinney, Tony McKinney, Otis Perry, Winston Ross.

Public viewing will be at Robert Jester Mortuary on Friday, February 7, 2014 at 4:00 p.m.


The family is receiving friends at the residence of Ms. Thomas at 6229 River Road, Camilla, Georgia.
