Larry F. Werth 86, Schoenchen, died Saturday, March 8, 2014 at the Via Christi Villages. He was born May 24, 1927 in Schoenchen and was the youngest and the last surviving member of the Nick and Magdalena (Hertel) Werth family. He was proceeded in death by eight brothers Clarence, Fr. Alvin O.F.M. Cap, Robert, Clement, Leonard, Alvin, with Frederick and John in infancy; and five sisters Amelia Haas, Lidwina Gottschalk, Barbara Zimmerman, Florine Werth and Juanita Bertourne.

Larry Married Laurine Werth (Frank Werth family) September 26, 1949 in Schoenchen and had four children: Michel (children - Fr. Joshua, Lucy Mullen and Alexandra), Janel Moore and husband Orville (children – Russ, Leigh Ann Edmonds, John and Curtis), Todd (children – Zachary and Alysha), and Nicolas (children – Connor), and 13 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He worked the family farm while all his brothers served in WWII. He was a farmer and for many years operated a sand business. He served on various school boards for eighteen years, including USD 489. He was instrumental in establishing the first public education funds for mentally disabled children in Ellis County. Local politicians of the time, knew Larry as an advocate of the common working man. One of his great enjoyments was serving many years in the Knights of Columbus, especially on the 3rd degree initiation team, that traveled throughout the state. Larry was a lifetime member of the St. Anthony parish in Schoenchen, KS, the St. Anthony Third Degree Knights of Columbus Council #4166, and the Bishop Cunningham Assembly of Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, Hays.

Larry led a local choir, The Schoencheers, that recorded Volga-German religious, Christmas and folk songs for posterity. He is one of the founders of the Volga - German Society of Ellis and Rush Counties and one of the original organizers, as well as an unwavering participant of the Ellis County Oktoberfest. He also sang in the German Men’s Choir.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 am on Wednesday, March 12, 2014 at the St. Anthony Catholic Church, Schoenchen. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 4:00 until 8:00 pm and on Wednesday from 9:00 am until 10:00, all at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine. A parish vigil service will be at 6:30 pm followed by a combined St. Anthony Third Degree Knights of Columbus Council #4166 and Bishop Cunningham Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus rosary at 7:00 pm, all at the funeral home. The Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus will stand honor guard from 5:30 until 6:30 on Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to family wishes, in care of the funeral home.
