Marcellus V. Schmidt, 97, Hays, died Monday, February 24, 2014 at the Wheatland Nursing Center in Russell, Kansas.

He was born January 26, 1917 in Catherine, Kansas the son of Fred and Margaret (Dinkel) Schmidt. On May 21, 1940 he married Anne A. Karlin in Catherine. She died July 15, 1997. He married Armella Riedel on July 3, 2000 in Catherine. He was a US Army veteran serving at the end of WWII. He was a maintenance supervisor at St. Anthony Hospital for a total of 24 years, retiring in 1986, and also worked 29 years in O’Laughlin and Ben F. Dreiling Body Shops in Hays. He was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus St. Joseph Council #1325, the Bishop Cunningham Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, and the American Legion. He was an avid gardener growing vegetables and flowers and took great pride in his lawn. He enjoyed woodworking, traveling, square dancing, and truly loved life.

Survivors include his wife, of the home, two sons, Francis F. Schmidt and wife Miko of Mulvane, KS and Marcellus E. Schmidt and wife Mary of Plainfield, Indiana, two daughters, JoAnn Braun and husband Leroy of of Victoria, Kansas and Benita Quimby and husband Dean of Derby, Kansas, two step sons, Mark Riedel and wife Shelly of Afghanistan, and Patrick Riedel and wife Diana of Russell, Kansas, a step daughter, Melissa Roberts and husband Dan of Hays, four sisters, Anna Schmidt of Hays, Tina Likiardoupolis and Marge Schmidt, both of Wichita, Kansas, and Frances Jane Jacobs and husband Marvin of Minnesota, fifteen grandchildren, thirty one great grandchildren, eleven step grandchildren and two step great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Connie Murphy, six brothers, Joe, Clarence, Alex, Fidelis, Hilary, and John Schmidt and three sisters, Catherine (Kate) Quint, Mary Agnes Pelzel, and an infant sister, Agnes Schmidt.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Saturday, March 1, 2014 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays. Burial with military honors by the Hays American Legion Post #173 will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 until 8:00pm on Friday and from 9:00 am until 9:45 on Saturday, all at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine. A parish vigil service will be at 6:30 pm followed by a combined 3rd and 4th degree Knights of Columbus rosary at 7:00, both on Friday at the funeral home. The Bishop Cunningham Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus will stand honor guard from 5:30 until 6:30 on Friday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the church.
