December 26, 1921 - March 24, 2014 <-

Funeral services for Kay Eggen will be held at 11:00 AM Monday, March 31. Pastor Mark Taylor will officiate at the service at Plentywood Lutheran Church; interment will be in Plentywood Memorial Cemetery. Kay was 92 at her death Monday, March 24 at Sheridan Memorial Nursing Home in Plentywood.

Kay Eggen was born December 26, 1921 the 14th child of Adam and Elizabeth (Loran) Kohler. She was 4 years old when her parents moved to the Outlook Community. She attended the Snuggins and Collins Schools north of Raymond until they moved to Plentywood in 1935, graduating in 1939. Following graduation she worked for J.E. Rucker, the city attorney, and later in the Courthouse as Secretary in the WPA office.

October 12, 1940 Kay met Joe Eggen at a dance at the Blue Moon. On June 1, 1942 they were married and were blessed with three children and became the matriarch of the family. They enjoyed traveling, especially their trips to Alaska and Hawaii, where they loved catching up with family and old friends.

Kay and Joe were charter members of the Sheridan County Saddle Club and held numerous trail rides at the J-E Ranch. Kay was also a charter member of the "Cowbelles" (now known as the "Cattlewomen") along with Dorothy Bergh, Saralda Nathe, Laura Wang and Ada Nash. One of Kay’s best memories was going to meetings & conventions as the assistant to the State President, Dorothy Bergh.

Kay and Joe helped organize the Archer Go-Getters 4-H club and she was a 4-H leader for decades. She baked pies and made salads for the 4-H kitchen at fair time thru the time some of her great-grandchildren were showing animals. Kay was also a Co-Chairman Treasurer for the Archer Community for Sheridan’s Daybreak I and II.

Kay worked very hard on the farm including regular household duties, feeding the "critters" of all kinds to driving truck. She moved to town October 1999, following Joe’s stroke in January. Joe’s passing January 30, 2002 left her very saddened and lonely. She then moved to the Pioneer Manor in August of 2003. Declining health led her to LaCasa in June 2013, and the Nursing home in August. Kay was very appreciative of the Manor, LaCasa and Nursing home staff and held them very dear to her heart. Many staff respected her as well, addressing her as "Miss Kay".

Kay is survived by her three children: Arvid (Linda), Joanne Beery (Eddy) and Linda Shackelford (Ed); 9 Grandchildren and 23 Greats: Lorrie Eggen( Justin, Jarett, Kacie), Jay-De Eggen (Kaylee, Aleecia, Emilee); Shayna and Ryan Switzer, Lissa (Clint) Volbrecht, (Megan, Ellie), Nita (Ed) Crockett [Taylor (Mariah), Courtney Hanson], Beth (Michael) Conroy (Colton, McKinna, Calder Flemming), Matt (Krista) Beery (Ethan, Leah); Nathan (Jessica) Shackelford (Ty, Will, Cole), Todd (Joanne) Shackelford (Bryce, Braiden), Lacie (Jeff) Ordahl (Briahnna) and 1 great-great grandchild Parker Hanson. She is also survived by a sister Jo Dietrich and sister-in-law Lillian (Eggen) Frasier and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband Joe, her parents, 12 siblings, and 2 granddaughters Karleen Beery, Leanne (Beery) Switzer.
