Raymond Jimenez Lara, 87, a longtime resident of Las Cruces, died Thursday, April 10, 2014 at the Cottonbloom Assisted Living and Memory Care Community where he lived the past three years. Raymond was born August 1, 1926 in Swartz, New Mexico, to Jose Carrasco and Diega Gonzales Lara, and grew up in Hot Springs (T or C). After graduating from Hot Springs High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. During his enlistment, he married Beverly Sherwood on November 11, 1950. After his military service, they returned to Truth or Consequences where he worked as a lineman for Sierra County Electric Co-op (REA). They moved to Las Cruces when he was hired as an electrician by civil service at White Sands Missile Range, from which he retired as chief electrical estimator in 1983. For many years he also farmed in the Mesilla Valley until his health prevented him from continuing. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Beverly, of 58 years, in 2009; three brothers, Joe, Henry and Harry Lara; five sisters, Carmen Ogaz, Virginia Chacon, Isabel Parra, Marcelina Otero and Cecelia Abila. Survivors include a daughter, Stephanie O’Dell and her husband Harold of Las Cruces; five sons, Jeff Lara and his wife Connie of Las Cruces, Harry Lara and his wife Barbara of Albuquerque, Tim Lara and his wife Joanna of Gilbert, Arizona, Greg Lara and his wife Joyce of Washington, Missouri, and Jon Lara and his wife Cay of Albuquerque; 16 grandchildren, Tiffany Mayton of Las Cruces, Amanda Varela and her husband Mark of San Antonio, Texas, Christina Ruybal and her husband Mike of Alexandria, Virginia, Brian Lara and his wife Nancy of Las Cruces, Miranda Burnett and her husband Andrew of Scottsville, Virginia, Vanessa Wrolsted and her husband Erik of Albuquerque, Suzanne Lara of Albuquerque, Tierney Koch and her husband Drew of Geneva, Switzerland, Michael Lara and his wife Ashleigh of Albuquerque, Makayla Lara of Houston, Texas, Shana Lara of Gilbert, Arizona, Ashley Lara of Washington, Missouri, Dillon Lara and his wife Mona of Columbia, Missouri, Christin Morris and her husband of Washington, John Jeffrey Rimer and his wife Tracy of Idaho, Dakota Moore and his wife Carli of Albuquerque, and Colton Moore of Phoenix, Arizona; 11 great grandchildren, Matthew, Shaeann, Kyler and Ryan Ruybal of Alexandria, Virginia, Zoey Grace Varela of San Antonio, Texas, Caleb and Kate Burnett of Scottsville, Virginia, Jack Wrolsted of Albuquerque, June Lara of Columbia, Missouri, and Elijah and Jonah Lara of Albuquerque; two brothers, Pete Lara of T or C, and Harry Lara and his wife Alicia of Henderson, Nevada; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.Visitation will be this evening from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at Getz Funeral Home.A vigil service will follow at 7:00 p.m. in the Getz Funeral Home Chapel with the Rosary to be recited by Harold O’Dell.Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 2:00 p.m. at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Cathedral with Father Narcisso Rivera as celebrant.Committal services will follow in the Masonic Cemetery.Pallbearers will be Michael Lara, Brian Lara, Dillon Lara, Hector Ogaz, Edward Ogaz and Abie Parra.Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, 322 Eighth Ave., 7th floor, New York, NY 10001, or at alzfdn.org.
