Lawrence R. “Buster” Fossen, 85, Beardsley, MN, passed away Sunday, December 29, 2013, at the Browns Valley Health Center.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, January 4, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Beardsley with Father David Breu officiating. Interment will be in the St. Mary’s Cemetery, Beardsley. Military honors will be provided by the August Altheide American Legion Post 302 of Beardsley. Visitation will be Saturday one hour prior to the service at the church.

Lawrence Richard Fossen was born October 5, 1928, at home in Beardsley. He was raised by parents Hilmer and Lillian (Simon) Fossen on the farm south of Beardsley with one brother, James. Buster attended Foster Township Country School through the eighth grade and continued his education graduating from Ortonville High School in 1946. While in school, he was active in 4-H, receiving Minnesota State awards showing prized sheep.

Buster farmed for 25 years and did assessing for 20 years in Big Stone County. On January 31, 1953, Buster married Audrey Jean Eastman at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Beardsley. They had four children.

His military service included assignments at Gary AFB in San Marcos, TX, and Fort George G. Meade in Baltimore, MD, as an Army helicopter mechanic from February 17, 1954, to February 16, 1956. He then was transferred to the Army Reserve until his honorable discharge on January 31, 1962. For his service, Buster earned the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. Buster was a member of the August Altheide American Legion Post 302 of Beardsley and the Knights of Columbus. Through his life, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, especially geese, trap shooting, watching sports, the casino, and visiting over a cup of coffee.

Survivors include four children, Claudia (Randy) Ward of Clinton, MN, Steve (Debbie) Fossen of Waseca, MN, Laurie (Don) Appel of Wheaton, MN, and Craig (Kari) Fossen of Mankato, MN; 16 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; brother, James (Lois) Fossen of Canby, MN; and sisters-in-law, Tooty Eastman of Graceville, MN, and Mary Eastman of Beardsley.

Buster was preceded in death by his wife, Audrey; and his parents, Hilmer and Lillian Fossen.
