Mary J. Nebben, 89, Beardsley, MN, passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends on Monday, December 9, 2013, at the Browns Valley Health Center, Browns Valley, MN.

Funeral Mass was Friday, December 13, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Beardsley with Father David Breu officiating. Music was provided by organist Deb Farwell and vocalists Sue Sykora and Kelsey Diekmann. Honorary pallbearers were the Browns Valley Health Care staff.

Burial will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Spring 2014 with family and loved ones.

Mary was born June 6, 1924, in Belfast, Northern Ireland, to Joseph and Mary (Toner) McDonald. She was one of twelve children. She married Marvin Nebben in April 1944 in Belfast. Mary and Marvin came to the United States in 1946 with their young son, Brendan. Since then, she and Marvin settled in the Beardsley area. In later years, Mary became an American citizen. Over the years, she was employed at Dresch’s Grocery, St. Mary’s Catholic Church, and worked as an aide and activities coordinator at the Browns Valley Health Center until her 80th birthday. Marvin passed away in May 1995. In 2004, Mary made her home in the Browns Valley Health Center.

Mary was active in a number of groups and organizations, including church choir, Sweet Adeline’s, CCD instructor, Circle member, and Communion server, both at Mass and serving those in their homes. She was honored for her service by the Catholic Church and received the Bishop’s Award.

Over the years, Mary traveled numerous times to both Canada and Northern Ireland to visit family and friends. She had a great love of music, gardening, cooking and baking, knitting, poetry, reading, religion, and above all, her family. She was deeply loved and will be greatly missed.

Survivors include her children, John (Corrine) Nebben, Kathy (Jesse) Stavick, Pat (Linda) Nebben, and Francis (Denise) Nebben; 21 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and siblings, Rita, Bridget, Bernadette, Ann, John and Geraldine. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Mary; husband, Marvin; son, Brendan; grandsons, Peter and Paul Nebben; granddaughter, Brenda Nebben; five sisters, Susan, Kaye, Shelia, Peggy and Nell; parents-in-law, John and Alice Nebben; and sister-in-law, Germaine Reick.
