John E. Vanderbilt

John E. Vanderbilt, 74, of Hide-A-Way Hills, passed away Thursday, January 16, 2014 at the Pickering House with loved ones by his side. He was born on March 24, 1939 in Cleveland, Ohio to the late George T. and Angela (Morley) Vanderbilt. John served his country in the United States Army during the Berlin Wall Crisis. John was a commercial Interior Designer. He designed the original Wendy’s Restaurant in Columbus, as well as the Justice Centers for Franklin and Cuyahoga Counties, among other notable facilities. He obtained his Bachelor’s of Fine Arts degree from Ohio University, Class of 1961. John was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Church and also an active member of St. Vincent De Paul Society and the Decorative Arts Center of Ohio. He was the Faithful Navigator of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus. John was also a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians.

He is survived by wife, Martha (Weiland) Vanderbilt; sons, John Jr. (Susan) and Peter (Joanna) Vanderbilt; daughters, Lisa (Rob) DeVol and Angela Vanderbilt; grandchildren, Nicholas and Catherine Mitchell, Daniel, Elizabeth and Grace Vanderbilt, Patrick and Anna Vanderbilt; great grandchildren, Jayden and Callie Mitchell; sister, Joan Williams of Philadelphia. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his brother, George “Bud” Vanderbilt of Cleveland.

A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, January 20 at 10:30 AM at St. Mary Church in Lancaster, Ohio with Fr. Craig Eilerman as Celebrant. Family and friends may visit on Sunday, January 19 from 2-4 PM & 6-8 PM at SHERIDAN FUNERAL HOME where a vigil service will be conducted at 7:30 PM. Burial will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent De Paul, American Heart Association, FairHoPe hospice, or to the Decorative Arts Center of Ohio in memory of John.
