Clifford Duane Edwards was born January 20, 1934 in Atwood, Kansas to Murray and Maude Edwards. He passed away April 10, 2014 at the age of 80.

Cliff graduated from high school in Atwood, Kansas. He served in the U. S. Air Force from 1951 to 1955, and later served seven years as a Mission Pilot with the Civil Air Patrol. He married Neva LouAnn Morgan, the love of his life, in 1954. Mark, Marilyn, and Cecily were born to this union.

He graduated from Fort Hays Kansas State College, in 1958 and was selected as a Woodrow Wilson Fellow and Teaching Fellow at the University of Michigan. After earning his doctorate, he served as Professor of English and Department Chairman at Fort Hays State University (1963-69; 1974-1999) and at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville (1969-1974). He especially enjoyed teaching American literature and doing scholarly research and publication in his chosen field of study.

A devout Christian, Cliff personally experienced the forgiveness of a merciful and loving Heavenly Father through the shed blood of Christ, his Lord and Savior. He was a member of Celebration Community Church in Hays, Kansas. He was an avid reader and loved music; he especially enjoyed playing the guitar, banjo, and piano to his father’s old-time fiddling, and playing music and singing with his family and friends. An aviation enthusiast, he loved flying; he also enjoyed construction and remodeling projects for his family.

He is survived by his wife, Neva, and his children, Mark Edwards and wife Patty, Manhattan, KS; Marilyn Engel and husband Bruce, Hays, KS and Cecily Hill and husband Paul, Dover, New Jersey; his sister LoRita Hilmes and husband Ralph, Montrose, CO; and brother-in-law Paul Brown, Goodland, KS; eleven grandchildren, Cara Rignell and husband Lonnie of Riley, KS, Caleb Edwards and Mariel Edwards, both of Manhattan, KS, Lorita Davis and husband Kane of Manhattan, Lee Stroup of Kansas City, Laura, Landon and Layton Stroup of Hays, Ryan Hill and wife Jasmine of Dover, NJ, and Olivia and Austin Hill both of Dover, NJ., three step-grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Cliff was a loving husband, father, and grandfather and a trusted friend. He will be sadly missed but fondly remembered by all who knew him.

Preceding him in death were his parents and an older sister, Shirley Brown.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 am on Wednesday, April 16, 2014 at the Celebration Community Church, Hays. Burial will be at 4:00 pm on Wednesday in the Chardon Cemetery in rural Rawlins County. Visitation will be from 6:00 until 8:00 pm on Tuesday at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine and from 10:00 am until service time on Wednesday at the church.
