Frederick M. “Fred” Beal, 96, Hays, died Thursday, April 10, 2014 at the Via Christi Villages.

He was born June 24, 1917 in Independence, Kansas the son of Fred E. and Jessie M. (Kumler) Beal. In the fall of 1942 he married Uneeta Stow in Tulsa, OK. She died in November of 1987. He later married Vera Reynolds in October of 1988. He was a graduate of Independence High School, attended college in Independence and at the Kansas University, and received his Petroleum Engineering degree from the University of Tulsa in 1941. . He spent five years working for Boeing Airplane Company during World War II and had a thirty-three and a half year career with Exxon Corp as a petroleum engineer, retiring in 1979. He was very active in his church, singing in church choirs, helping with church Sunday School classes, serving on church boards, and volunteering for many church projects. After retirement, he enjoyed woodworking, personal computers and working in his yard. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Hays.

Survivors include his wife Vera, of the home, daughter Anita (Beal) Lange and husband Kenneth of Santa Rosa, CA, son Frederick M. “Rick” Beal, Jr. and wife Joni of LaQuinta, CA, daughter Joanne (Beal) Steeples and husband David of Hays, step daughter, Karen (Reynolds) Murphy and husband Stephen of Rantoul, IL, nine grandchildren Steve Lange, Brian Lange, Ryan Beal, Layne Beal, Stephanie Beal, Brandon Beal, Shelly Gruenbacher, Shannon Hassler, and Stacey Anstaett, and sixteen great grandchildren with one more on the way.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Grace Roberta Walts in 1975.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Tuesday, April 15, 2014 at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine. Burial will be at 11:00 am on Wednesday at the Mt. Hope Cemetery in Independence, Kansas. Visitation will be from 9:00 am until service time on Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Hospice of Hays Medical Center, in care of the funeral home. Condolences may be left for the family at www.haysmemorial.com
