Winnie Lea Anderson

November 22, 1929 - April 23, 2014 <-

Winnie Simmons Anderson joined her husband, Donald Anderson and our Lord in Heaven on April 23, 2014. Winnie is survived by her children, (Louis, Brad, and Melody), grandchildren (Amber, Cole, D. J. and Hailey), brothers, Robert and Royce, and sister, Gloria Cornett, nephews James, Mike and Justin and nieces Linda and Mandy.

Winnie was born in Daisetta, Texas on November 22, 1929 to Victor Marion Simmons and Mabel McElveen Simmons. In 1939, the family moved to Brazoria County to live with her grandmother, Hattie McElveen and Aunt Marie on their farm between West Columbia and Damon. They eventually moved to their own home purchased by her father’s employer Gulf Oil Company. Her father died the following year due to complications from a mustard gas attack during WW I.

Don and Winnie met when they worked at the Brazoria County Courthouse in Angleton in 1951. Don was with the county engineers on the 3rd floor and Winnie worked for Beatrice Elliott in the Home Demonstrations office on the ground floor. Their first date was April 1, 1951. Don gave Winnie an engagement ring on May 19, 1951, and they were married November 17.

During their 46 years together, Don was employed by various petrochemical companies that required him to go overseas. On many occasions, Winnie, and later their children, would join him. Spain, Holland , France, Algeria and Venezuela were just a few of the places they got to enjoy.

Winnie was very proud of the military service her family has provided to this country. Her father served in France during WW I, her brother Marion in the Pacific during WW II, her brother Royce in Europe during the Cold War, and her brother Robert who made a career of the Army, which included combat time as a Green Beret in Vietnam. Her own children continued this tradition: sons, Louis and Brad graduated from West Point in 1979 and 1985, respectively, and her daughter, Melody continues to serve in the Air Force Reserves.

Funeral services will be held Monday, April 28, 2014 at 11:00 am at Baker Funeral Home in West Columbia with Ryan Lintelman officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Lawn Haven of Rest. Visitation will be from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm on Sunday, April 27, 2014 at Baker Funeral Home in West Columbia.
